New Hampshire Celebrates the Pine Tree Riot and Independence
As the United States celebrates 250 years of independence, New Hampshire draws attention to its historical role. Governor Kelly Ayotte highlighted the Pine Tree Riot as a key event predating the Boston Tea Party.
Ayotte explained that the British imposed taxes on New Hampshire’s pine trees, leading to the 1772 Pine Tree Riot. This event demonstrated that colonists could resist British policies.
At the Great American State Fair on the National Mall in Washington D.C., New Hampshire’s exhibit showcases this history. The state, Ayotte noted, was instrumental in ratifying the Constitution and drafting its own.
During the fair, New Hampshire presents its history, including a video with prominent state figures reading from the Declaration of Independence, and the giving of New Hampshire maple syrup.
Back in New Hampshire, the Statehouse visitors center plans to display special documents, such as a Dunlap Broadside and a William J. Stone engraving of the Declaration of Independence.
Cities and towns across New Hampshire regularly lead Fourth of July celebrations with parades, fairs, and fireworks. This year continues that tradition, with Ayotte participating in multiple parades.
