Controversy Over Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Repair
The Trump administration will continue with the same contractors for the repair of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. This decision has been confirmed by Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, who addressed concerns about the project and its associated costs. He reiterated President Donald Trump’s belief that vandals caused the damage, specifying that multiple cuts in the pool’s liner total a 350-foot gash. The pool will require partial drainage to complete the repairs.
Burgum expressed satisfaction with the original contractor’s work, stating, “We’ll use the same company because they did a fantastic job.” He noted that, although the vandalism resulted in potentially costly damages, the repairs were executed well.
Trump had committed to enhancing the Reflecting Pool in time for the United States’ 250th birthday celebrations on July Fourth. The pool had been drained, and Trump directed that the bottom be painted “American flag blue.” However, post-renovation, the water experienced an algae bloom, and the new coating began peeling.
The pool remained closed for Independence Day due to safety concerns related to fireworks. This issue is part of the broader controversy surrounding Trump’s initiative to revamp Washington’s landmarks during his presidency. The matter has further escalated with the arrest of more than six individuals in connection with the Reflecting Pool’s damage.
Among those arrested is former Olympian David Hearn, who faces allegations of deliberately damaging the pool sealant, causing over $1,000 in damage. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro accused Hearn of forcefully removing the bottom liner, describing his actions as aggressive. Hearn’s legal team contested the charges, calling them an “outrageous” example of government overreach.
Burgum was non-committal when questioned about photographic evidence of the vandalism or whether Hearn deserved the maximum 10-year sentence. He emphasized, “The courts will decide.” Concerns have also arisen regarding no-bid contracts awarded to those with prior links to Trump.
Contracts include $1.7 million to Ohio-based Green Water Solutions for a new water-purification system and $14.7 million to Virginia-based Atlantic Industrial Coatings for pool repainting and waterproofing. Democratic senators and House members are probing the project to ensure transparency and accountability for taxpayers.
