Mallory McMorrow, a Democratic state senator from Michigan, has decided to suspend her campaign for the U.S. Senate. Her announcement came on Sunday, following challenges in polling and fund-raising when compared to her main opponents.
In a social media post, Ms. McMorrow expressed gratitude to her volunteers and donors while declaring, “Today, I’m announcing that I am suspending my campaign for United States Senate.” Her withdrawal leaves the Democratic Senate primary in Michigan as a contest between Representative Haley Stevens and Dr. Abdul El-Sayed.
Representative Haley Stevens, known for her moderate stance, receives backing from Senator Chuck Schumer and pro-Israel organizations. Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, previously a public health official, is supported by progressive figures like Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Ms. McMorrow, during her campaign, argued that Michigan voters should not be constrained to a strict choice between Ms. Stevens, embedded in the party establishment, and Dr. El-Sayed, whose progressive views have sparked concern over electability. In a prior CNN interview, she asserted, “We are being presented right now with what I believe is a false binary choice.”
Republican former Representative Mike Rogers is expected to be nominated as a candidate by Michigan Republicans. The Senate seat, vacated by retiring Democrat Senator Gary Peters, is key for Democrats aiming to control the Senate in the upcoming midterm elections on August 4.
Ms. McMorrow, who gained recognition through her media appearances and online presence, faced declining support after criticizing Dr. El-Sayed for collaborating with Hasan Piker. Piker is a controversial figure known for defending Hamas and labeling Israel as an “apartheid state.” This criticism seemed to reinforce Dr. El-Sayed’s position as the primary progressive candidate willing to challenge U.S. military support for Israel.
Meanwhile, Ms. Stevens benefited from significant financial support as millions of advertising dollars flowed into Michigan from groups like the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, undermining Ms. McMorrow’s efforts to garner moderate voter support.
