Emma Selvidge, a 19-year-old from Oklahoma, experienced an ordeal that started with a mysterious lump on her forehead. On April 2, she woke up at 3 a.m. and initially suspected a bug bite. First thing in the morning, she visited urgent care.
Doctors believed it was a spider bite and treated her with antibiotics and a shot for a potential infection. However, within minutes, the swelling worsened and spread to her eye. This rapid change alarmed her.
Selvidge managed to work that day but grew worried as her vision deteriorated. After her shift, she visited the ER. Doctors conducted a CT scan suspecting an abscess and treated her for possible MRSA.
The swelling intensified, leading to a necessary surgery to drain an abscess. During this procedure, doctors discovered an unrelated tonsil issue, suggesting another surgery might be needed. Despite her fears of surgery, the procedure helped reduce swelling, but Selvidge still faced vision problems.
She was hospitalized until April 5, but the ordeal didn’t end there. About a month later, the swelling returned, causing severe sinus infections and headaches.
Her condition worsened with a third swelling occurrence. This time, vision issues became lasting, accompanied by severe headaches and impaired blood flow sensations.
Further tests revealed mild stenosis of the right transverse sinus and a narrowing in a main brain vein. However, the exact cause and treatment remain unknown.
Selvidge deals with daily headaches, a sore throat, and vision complications. Recovery is slow, and she takes medication for her sinuses.
Sharing her story on social media, Selvidge aims to encourage others to trust their instincts. She stresses the importance of questioning and self-advocacy, remaining hopeful despite lacking full answers.
She hopes her experience will help others seek timely medical attention before issues become life-threatening.
