Chase Briscoe achieved a significant milestone at Chicagoland Speedway on a patriotic weekend. Hailing from Mitchell, Indiana, Briscoe turned NASCAR’s return to Joliet into a noteworthy victory and embraced the moment fully.
“I felt like the most American I’ll ever feel,” Briscoe remarked after his triumph, which featured the iconic red, white, and blue Bass Pro Shops paint scheme during the Fourth of July weekend. He celebrated by mimicking a fishing motion, paying tribute to his sponsor.
Briscoe secured his first Cup Series win of the season by withstanding a challenge from Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Christopher Bell. The victory at the eero 400 occurred before a packed house at Chicagoland Speedway. Other notable performances included Denny Hamlin finishing third, William Byron leading 94 laps and winning two stages, and Alex Bowman claiming the fifth position.
The top ten featured Bubba Wallace, Ryan Blaney, Ty Gibbs, Corey Heim, and Riley Herbst. Tyler Reddick, who was second in the points standings, had a night to forget, finishing 36th due to mechanical issues.
In the race’s crucial moments, Briscoe emerged from the pits as the leader with 42 laps remaining and managed to maintain his lead despite Bell’s efforts. He acknowledged feeling pressure but stayed focused, knowing he had to drive perfectly.
Briscoe also recounted his previous success at Chicagoland Speedway, where he won an ARCA race in 2016. This recent victory marked his first on a 1.5-mile track in the Cup Series, making it a special and memorable event.
A Midwest native, Briscoe expressed his affection for the Chicagoland track, valuing its proximity to home and ranking it among his top five tracks.
The race commenced with Mike Alstott, local figure and former Tampa Bay Buccaneers fullback, driving the pace car. Alstott expressed his appreciation for the NASCAR community and the chance to be involved in the event.
Joe Gibbs, former NFL coach and owner of Joe Gibbs Racing, celebrated the victory, emphasizing the significance of the win and the support from Chicago fans.
Christopher Bell, another Gibbs team driver, narrowly missed victory, highlighting the competitiveness and performance of their cars.
The win was particularly sweet for Briscoe as it coincided with his crew chief James Small’s birthday, providing a memorable gift.
