President Donald Trump exerted his influence on FIFA, impacting their decision regarding Folarin Balogun, a lead player for the U.S. team. This action pointed out issues within FIFA and its video assistant referee (VAR) system.
Trump’s Involvement
FIFA changed an initial decision after Trump’s intervention, attracting accusations of political meddling. Trump called FIFA President Gianni Infantino, highlighting concerns about Balogun’s penalty. FIFA then suspended the player’s one-match ban, which allowed Balogun to play in the World Cup’s round of 16.
“It absolutely stinks,” remarked Gary Neville, ex-defender for England and Manchester United. He suggested that a better review process should have overturned the call.
The VAR Incident
The issue began during a match in Santa Clara. Referee Raphael Claus initially took no action against Balogun after his encounter with a Bosnian defender. However, VAR’s intervention marked the incident a red card. This decision led to the temporary suspension of Balogun.
Mark Clattenburg, a seasoned referee, believed the event didn’t merit VAR’s interference. He argued that at real speed, the involvement seemed like a natural collision rather than deserving a red card.
Trump’s Actions
Beyond just a phone call, U.S. officials used further evidence in FIFA’s reconsideration. Even though U.S. Soccer didn’t file an official appeal, Trump expressed appreciation on social media for FIFA’s decision, although they technically didn’t reverse the red card.
Ironies and Underlying Issues
Balogun, by birthright, is American but wasn’t an intentional symbol of nationalism, illustrating Trump’s ironic bid. Despite his parents being Nigerian, he was born in the U.S., fostering a legal discussion on immigration rules.
Politically, this development followed a rejected executive order on birthright citizenship by the Supreme Court, days before Trump’s intervention to maintain Balogun’s presence in the World Cup.
FIFA’s Response Mechanism
FIFA used Article 27 of its code to defer Balogun’s suspension rather than nullify it. While France previously benefited from such flexibility, the decision drew criticism, especially from Belgium, who was set to face the U.S. team next.
Critics like England’s Thomas Tuchel questioned the implications, pondering future cases where leaders may attempt similar interventions during the World Cup.
Navigating Future Disputes
There’s a call for FIFA to improve VAR explanations on decisions, making the process more transparent and fair. Such clarity would ensure all nations, regardless of political influence, receive equitable treatment in VAR-related issues.
