Mourning Ceremonies for Iranian Supreme Leader Draw Millions
On July 7, 2026, Iranian state media reported that mourning ceremonies are taking place in five cities across Iran and Iraq. These events mark the farewell to the supreme leader, who was killed in late February. Millions have gathered to express their sorrow and to show solidarity with the Islamic Republic of Iran.

In Tehran, journalists reported that the route of the mourning procession was shortened due to the unexpectedly large turnout. Instead of a 17-mile journey, the procession moved slowly from the center of a designated road to the expansive Azadi Square. This adjustment was necessary to accommodate the multitude of mourners.
On Tuesday, the ceremonies moved to Qom, known as a hub for Shiite Muslim studies. The final city in this funeral procession will be Mashhad, scheduled for Thursday. Ayatollah Khamenei will be laid to rest at the Imam Reza shrine, an important site for Shiites who regard its namesake as a spiritual successor to the Prophet Muhammad.
The chosen locations for these ceremonies highlight the supreme leader’s clerical influence and the high regard in which he was held.
