Venezuelans have begun publicly voicing their anger at the government’s response to recent earthquakes, despite the risk of imprisonment. This shift marks a significant change in a society often silenced by fear.
In La Guaira, the northern state most affected by the quakes, citizens have confronted police and National Guard members. They accuse them of passively observing while civilians and international aid workers handle rescue efforts. The devastation has led to a torrent of criticism against the ruling party and Delcy Rodríguez, which was unimaginable a year prior.
Discontent is also directed at the Trump administration. Recent economic deals between American companies and Venezuela, viewed as supportive of the government’s handling of the disaster, have fueled frustration among the public.
Inside Venezuela, traditional fears of imprisonment, torture, and exile are losing power. The overwhelming frustration and feeling of helplessness are encouraging more open expressions of discontent.
“Why would I be afraid?” commented José Silva, aged 47, reflecting the growing sentiment. His remarks came as he rested near a public housing complex reduced to rubble, which had housed 700 families.
