Nikole Hannah-Jones, who created the 1619 Project, recently discussed reparations for slavery. She argued that such payments would acknowledge the “entire existence of the United States” as a crime. “Paying reparations is an admission of the crime,” Hannah-Jones stated. “But it’s not just a few bad policies. It is the crime of the entire existence of the United States.”
Her remarks were made in an interview with Brittany Packnett Cunningham for The Meteor, a left-leaning media outlet. The discussion centered on slavery’s legacy and reparations amid the U.S. approaching its 250th anniversary.
“You could never knock down all the statues to enslavers, or you have to remove all the monuments on the Mall in Washington,”
Hannah-Jones emphasized, noting slavery predated the U.S. by 150 years. Her statements underline the deep roots of slavery in American history, arguing that removing monuments alone is insufficient.
The 1619 Project, a collaboration with The New York Times, aims to “reframe the country’s history” by highlighting slavery and racism. While praised by some, it has faced criticism from historians disputing its claims, especially regarding the American Revolution’s motivations.
The project’s ideas formed an educational curriculum supported by the Pulitzer Center. This curriculum has reached hundreds of schools and over 4,000 educators, sparking backlash from parents and conservative lawmakers opposed to critical race theory (CRT).
In an interview with ABC’s Robyn Roberts, Hannah-Jones mentioned how the American education system’s handling of slavery has fueled conservative resistance to Juneteenth and CRT. This movement reflects ongoing debates over history’s portrayal in education.
