Cancer is one of the oldest diseases documented in human history, with mentions dating back to ancient Egyptian texts around 3000 B.C. Today, we understand that cancer begins with mutations in DNA. Despite extensive research, curing cancer remains a challenge.
Historical Treatments
Over the centuries, people have tried a variety of methods to cure cancer, from pastes and salts to teas and cauterization. In the 1700s, British surgeon Percivall Pott connected cancer to environmental causes. He observed that chimney sweeps developed a specific cancer type due to soot exposure. This finding led to age regulations for chimney sweeps, highlighting prevention rather than treatment.
Mariana Stern, a cancer epidemiologist from the University of Southern California, notes that cancer was once considered a death sentence. Surgery was the typical treatment, but incomplete removal of cancer cells prompted the need for additional therapies. By the late 19th century, physicians discovered radiation’s role in treating cancer. Swedish physicians Tor Stenbeck and Tage Sjogren successfully used X-rays to treat skin cancer. While effective, radiation also posed risks, like causing leukemia in some radiologists.
Advancements in Cancer Treatment
In the mid-1900s, chemotherapy emerged as a method to kill cancer cells unreachable by surgery or radiation. Chemotherapy targets dividing cells, a characteristic of cancer. Cancer survival rates have increased significantly, although this success varies among the over 100 cancer types.
Understanding Cancer Varieties
According to Stern, finding a single cure for all cancers is unlikely due to each one’s unique characteristics. Focus has shifted to improving prevention and treatment for each cancer type. While 5-10% of cancers are genetic, most result from random DNA mutations. Environmental and internal carcinogens also contribute to these mutations.
The list of carcinogens includes sun exposure, tobacco use, diets high in processed meats, inactivity, and certain viruses. Age is the leading carcinogen, linked to cellular deterioration and mutation accumulation.
Stern emphasizes that aging doesn’t mean certain cancer development. Awareness of carcinogenic factors that accumulate over time can help mitigate risk.
Modern Approaches
Recent years have seen improved cancer survival rates due to personalized treatment strategies. Stern explains that two patients with the same cancer type might receive different treatments based on their tumors’ characteristics. For instance, breast cancer treatment may involve drugs originally developed for lung cancer.
Addressing Disparities
Stern’s research also includes examining cancer rate and outcome disparities across different demographics. Research on Hispanic, American Indian, Alaska Native, and African-American populations lags, leading to disparities, as many treatments are based on European-derived data. Recognizing these differences is vital for effective treatment.
Harnessing the Immune System
A promising treatment involves using the immune system to target cancer cells. This approach is particularly effective because the immune system can monitor for abnormal cells.
Challenges in Access
Despite advancements, access to treatment remains a critical issue. Stern stresses the need to ensure all cancer patients receive the best available treatments, a goal yet to be achieved.

Continued research and commitment to equitable treatment access are crucial for future progress in combating cancer.
