Pat Oliphant’s Legacy in Political Cartooning

The Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Pat Oliphant has made a significant mark in political cartooning by satirizing U.S. presidents from Lyndon B. Johnson to Donald Trump. Through syndication, his cartoons have reached a broad audience over the years.

One of the pivotal moments in Oliphant’s career occurred when he decided to submit his work for the 1967 Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning. He carefully selected a dozen of his cartoons published in the Denver Post. While he felt confident about 11 pieces, he included one additional cartoon which he believed lacked quality. This choice was strategic, as he thought it might resonate with the jury’s political views.

Oliphant’s influence is notable, given that he continued to create thought-provoking work for decades. In 1998, his contributions to the field were celebrated during an exhibition at the Susan Conway Gallery in Washington.
