Sunny Hostin’s Views on American Flags and Perceived Safety

The View co-host Sunny Hostin reaffirmed her stance, saying she feels “unsafe” in areas with numerous American flags. During the “Behind the Table” podcast, she spoke with the show’s executive producer, Brian Teta, sharing that this topic is not unfamiliar in the Black community.

Hostin recalled a visit to a friend’s beach house in North Carolina where she felt uneasy after seeing a Confederate flag. She explained her discomfort to her hosts, who had long been aware of the flag but did not experience the same reaction.

Last week, Hostin reflected on America’s 250th anniversary celebration episode, mentioning a 2021 remark about her discomfort in flag-heavy neighborhoods. Hostin described a portion of the country that associates the American flag with White supremacy, a perception she believes has evolved over time.

During a podcast on Monday, Hostin clarified her position. She emphasized she has no issue with the American flag itself, but feels uneasy in communities where it is excessively displayed. Hostin argued that far-right groups have adopted the flag, symbolizing their version of patriotism, which she finds troubling.

Hostin expressed support for reclaiming the American flag as a symbol of justice, freedom, and equality. She expressed her willingness to participate in efforts to redefine what the flag represents. Hostin also referenced her past comments defending people like MSNBC analyst Mara Gay, who have experienced similar feelings of unease when encountering American flags in certain contexts.
