Cody Bellinger Shines as All-Star Game MVP

Cody Bellinger earned the All-Star Game MVP award on Tuesday night, despite facing a challenging crowd. This accolade came during an event held in Philadelphia, where New York Yankees players were not warmly received due to the residual rivalry from the 2009 World Series.

Bellinger started in right field, stepping in for Aaron Judge and Byron Buxton, both sidelined with injuries. He played a critical role in the American League’s 4-0 triumph over the National League at Citizens Bank Park.

In the first inning, Bellinger faced Cristopher Sánchez, a top NL Cy Young contender. He hit a middle-middle sinker for a two-run single into center field, establishing momentum for the American League. Despite finishing 1-for-3 with two RBIs, this key performance secured him the MVP award. Bellinger expressed his surprise at the unexpected MVP result, attributing it to dominant pitching performance in the game.

The MVP award was presented to Bellinger by Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt. Accompanied by his family, Bellinger accepted this honor, marking the Yankees’ third All-Star Game MVP and their first since Giancarlo Stanton’s win in 2022.

Bellinger’s fellow Yankee, Ben Rice, also contributed with an RBI single in the first inning, setting a 3-0 lead for the AL. The game saw no further scoring until Miguel Vargas of the Chicago White Sox delivered a solo home run in the eighth inning.

This game marked Bellinger’s third All-Star appearance but his first since 2019 when he received the NL MVP while with the Los Angeles Dodgers. This season, Bellinger has recorded a 114 OPS+ and demonstrated solid defensive skills for the Yankees. It is his second season with the team, having signed a five-year, $162.5 million contract during the offseason.
