Chipotle Mexican Grill is launching its first restaurant in Mexico. The U.S.-based chain, known for its Mexican-inspired menu, is opening in San Pedro Garza García, Nuevo León. This marks the brand’s entry into the country whose cuisine has influenced its offerings.
The restaurant opens in partnership with Alsea, a major restaurant operator that also manages brands like Starbucks, Domino’s Pizza, Burger King, and Chili’s. The new location will feature Chipotle’s menu of customizable burritos, bowls, salads, tacos, and quesadillas.
This opening is backed by a development agreement with Alsea from April 2025. The plan includes several more locations in Nuevo León this year and expansion into Mexico City by 2027. Monterrey serves as the launch point due to its dynamic economy, growing population, and status as a business hub.
Scott Boatwright, Chipotle’s CEO, emphasized respect for Mexico’s culinary heritage. Chipotle’s Chief Business Development Officer, Nate Lawton, noted that the first restaurant will provide insights into local consumer preferences.
Taco Bell’s attempts in Mexico were unsuccessful due to cost issues and product unfamiliarity. Taco Bell aimed at Mexican fast food but did not resonate with local tastes.
In contrast, Chipotle offers a trusted fast-casual format, aligning with local tastes and relying on Alsea’s regional expertise.
Taco Bell’s Challenges
Historically, Taco Bell has struggled in the Mexican market. It first entered in 1992 with a food cart in Mexico City, selling American-style tacos and burritos. The high prices and unfamiliar menu items led to its closure by 1994.
In 2007, Taco Bell attempted a different strategy, promoting itself as an American chain with items such as french fries and soft-serve ice cream. This approach failed and no Taco Bell outlets have reopened since 2007.
Food service consultant Peter Backman explains that Taco Bell competed directly against local taquerias, offering Americanized versions of Mexican food. Chipotle, by contrast, focuses on a model based on already trusted ingredients, avoiding direct competition.
Global Expansion Strategy
Chipotle’s Mexico opening is part of a broader international expansion plan. The Alshaya Group operates 15 Chipotle restaurants in the UAE, Kuwait, and Qatar following a 2023 agreement. The company is also planning a South Korea opening later this year and Singapore next year, in collaboration with SPC Group. Meanwhile, Chipotle maintains over 80 locations in Canada, 20 in the U.K., six in France, and two in Germany.
Globally, Chipotle operates over 4,100 restaurants and aims to add 350 to 370 new locations by 2026.
