NBA Investigation Delays Kawhi Leonard Trade

The Toronto Raptors made waves on June 30 by trading for Kawhi Leonard from the Los Angeles Clippers. Leonard, who led Toronto to its first NBA championship in 2019, was traded in exchange for Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, a 2027 first-round pick swap, and two second-round picks.

However, an NBA investigation has put the trade on hold. The probe focuses on Leonard’s $28 million endorsement deal with Aspiration, a bankrupt “green banking” company. Questions linger about whether the Clippers aided Leonard in bypassing the salary cap through this endorsement.

Concerns have arisen because Clippers owner Steve Ballmer had invested $60 million into Aspiration. The NBA is trying to determine if the endorsement was legitimate or a method to compensate Leonard unofficially. The law firm Wachtell Lipton has been investigating the situation since September 2025.

“The investigation isn’t just about Aspiration anymore,” reported Mike Vorkunov from The Athletic.

Investigators are checking if the Clippers covered Leonard’s expenses without reimbursement and if he has another undisclosed endorsement deal. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver expressed a desire for the investigation to conclude before the next season starts, acknowledging the delays have been lengthier than anticipated.

Silver noted that legal issues like bankruptcy proceedings and uncooperative witnesses have extended the investigation. He stated that while he receives weekly updates, no final conclusions have yet been reached.

Addressing the trade freeze, Silver clarified that the NBA did not stop the trade. He explained that both parties involved in the trade decided not to proceed while the investigation continues.

Silver reassured that any risks associated with Leonard’s contract were transparent to interested teams. Potential suitors had already questioned the league office and received responses, so there were no unexpected revelations.
