Tragic Fire at Bangkok Music Bar Claims More Than 30 Lives
Burned musical instruments were found in front of a music bar in Bangkok, Thailand, following a tragic fire on Monday, July 13, 2026. Among the victims of this devastating event were four members of a band that was performing when the fire broke out. This loss has drawn widespread attention in Thailand, with the fate of the Totsakan band being a major focus.
As Thailand grappled with sadness, confusion, and demands for compensation, a poignant moment came from Chanyanuch Pudmon, the sister of one of the victims. Her brother, Preutthipong Pudmon, was the keyboard player. He expressed his passion for music, and his sister conveyed his likely wish: “If I can be his representative, I think he would say he doesn’t want to see everyone sad and cry.” She emphasized remembering his smile while performing.
The fire that erupted on Sunday night resulted in at least 33 fatalities and numerous injuries, with 17 individuals critically hospitalized, according to Erawan emergency services. Wiroon Supasingsiripreecha, head of the forensic institute, stated that most victims succumbed to smoke inhalation, while some died from burn injuries. The cause of the fire at the Rong Beer Na Ladprao bar in northern Bangkok is under investigation, focusing on the flammability of soundproofing materials, emergency exit accessibility, and the venue’s legal status.
The Impact on the Band and Community
The Totsakan band, known for its roots music popular in rural areas, was a staple at the bar each Sunday. During the incident, the band’s members were among the first to notice a spark, possibly from a circuit breaker, that ignited the blaze across the ceiling. They struggled to escape through the cramped and dark exits.
Amidst the chaos, the band’s leader, Atipat Wijan, known as “Ice,” suffered a personal tragedy. In a TV interview, he recounted how the band’s bass player informed him of CPR efforts on Nahatai Sajjalert, the lead female singer and his girlfriend. Despite attempts to revive her, she did not survive.
A misunderstanding led to false hope about keyboardist Preutthipong “Kwang” Pudmon’s fate; he remained trapped inside the bar. Another band member, drummer Nattapat “Biw” Thamnita, was critically evacuated but also did not survive.
Grief and Recovery Efforts
On Wednesday, the band’s community experienced further heartbreak with the passing of another male singer, Thitiwat “Din” Kaewkanha. Initially reported missing, he had been hospitalized with severe burns and did not recover. Survivors and victims’ families visited a police station seeking compensation and retrieving belongings.
Natthaphong Lakhorn, who escaped the blaze with injuries, recalled fleeing through a backdoor assisted by a security guard with a flashlight. While he reported no fire alarm, he plans to seek compensation for his injuries.
Kanticha Singkhon, now responsible for her younger brother, spoke at the police station about arranging her late mother’s funeral. She expressed a need for the bar owners to proactively contact victims’ families, many from distant areas.
A lawyer for the bar owners informed that initial compensation for survivors and families would be 10,000 baht ($300). Kanticha shared how this would not suffice for funeral expenses, forcing her to seek loans for arrangements, as no financial assistance or contact with the victims’ families had been arranged.
