Billionaire Coalition Opposes Proposed California Wealth Tax
A coalition of wealthy individuals, including Google co-founder Sergey Brin, is actively working against a proposed one-time tax targeting California’s richest residents. This group has reserved close to $87 million in advertising airtime across the state, preparing to launch TV commercials next month. Their efforts mark the start of what is expected to be a costly battle influencing Silicon Valley and state politics.
Proposition 40, on the upcoming November ballot, seeks to impose a one-time tax on California residents possessing a net worth of $1 billion or more. The mere possibility of such a tax has prompted some of the state’s wealthiest individuals to relocate or invest heavily in political campaigns.
In response, the coalition, named Building A Better California, has introduced two tax-related measures on the ballot. These measures aim to nullify the billionaire tax should any of them pass alongside Proposition 40. The specific details of the advertisements planned by Building A Better California remain undisclosed.
Abby Lunardini, the group’s spokeswoman, has emphasized the coalition’s dedication to ensuring California voters are well-informed about policies impacting the state’s future. Lunardini states, “The measures we support offer essential and practical protections meant to enhance state accountability and governance, safeguarding California families from new taxes on their retirement and savings.”
