The current investigation into a construction project at 235 East 42nd Street in Manhattan has uncovered ties to firms with checkered pasts. Among those connected are individuals involved in previous legal controversies. Ronald Lattanzio, a former city official who later confessed to bribery, founded Domani Inspection Services. The company had the responsibility of overseeing structural changes as the building transitioned from office space to residential apartments.

Structural Failures and Evacuation

Recently, two columns inside the high-rise buckled, prompting evacuations and raising concerns about the structural integrity of the site. This incident has sparked a preliminary criminal inquiry by the Manhattan district attorney and the city’s Department of Investigation. The project, which had aimed to transform office spaces into housing units, faces scrutiny over compliance with safety standards.

Connections to Past Controversies

Lattanzio, the company founder, previously served as an assistant commissioner at the Buildings Department. His resignation was marked by accusations of inappropriate conduct in office. In his private sector career, Lattanzio pleaded guilty to bribery in 1998. During a 2001 corruption trial, he testified about gifts and favors exchanged with a city councilman who facilitated bureaucratic processes in return.

Engineering Oversight and Errors

Engineers, independent from the construction project, identified lack of reinforcement as a possible reason for the column failure. They noted that the columns were supposed to have additional support through steel plates, as per the project’s plans. However, representatives from GACE Consulting Engineers confirmed that these reinforcements had not been implemented.
