Wildfire Smoke Affecting U.S. Sports Events

Smoke from Canadian wildfires has engulfed major northern U.S. cities, resulting in hazardous air quality alerts across 15 states, impacting over 100 million Americans. Health experts warn about the severe risks associated with fine particulate matter, including exacerbating asthma, heart conditions, and potential cancer risk.

In the Midwest and Northeast, these conditions have affected sporting events. On Thursday, a Major League Soccer match was postponed, while a Major League Baseball game in Philadelphia was rescheduled to an earlier time due to air quality concerns.

With the second half of the Major League Baseball season starting on Friday, adjustments have been made to the logistics of several games.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. New York Yankees, 7:05 p.m. ET
The Yankees previously postponed a game in 2023 due to poor air quality, which was significantly higher than this week’s levels. Air quality improved over the day, allowing the match to proceed as planned.

Chicago White Sox vs. Toronto Blue Jays, 7:15 p.m. ET
The Blue Jays games are affected due to their proximity to the origin of the wildfires. Toronto experienced hazardous air quality on Thursday night but reached a “low health risk” level by Friday afternoon. Despite ongoing risk in nearby Ontario cities, the Blue Jays used the retractable roof at Rogers Centre, announcing its closure due to air conditions. This is subject to further change based on umpire and MLB official consensus.

Miami Marlins vs. Milwaukee Brewers, 7:40 p.m. ET
Air quality in Milwaukee improved from “very unhealthy” to a lower index. Brewers proceeded with the game at American Family Field, which features a retractable roof. Fans can exchange tickets for another game if preferred.

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Cleveland Guardians, 7:10 p.m. ET
The Guardians announced a schedule change due to the air quality index reaching “very unhealthy” levels, postponing the game to Saturday as part of a doubleheader. Ticket exchanges are available for fans unable to attend.

Minnesota Twins vs. Chicago Cubs, 8:05 p.m. ET
Despite earlier “very unhealthy” air quality readings in Chicago, the situation improved, leading to the decision to play a rare Friday night game at Wrigley Field.

The smoke not only affects air quality but also influences major sporting events, illustrating the widespread impact of these environmental conditions.
