Concerns Surround New Air Force One as It Awaits Upgrades

President Donald Trump announced that the recently acquired Air Force One, gifted by Qatar, will soon be sent for upgrades. This comes amid increasing concerns about its security features. Upon his return from the FIFA World Cup final in New Jersey, Trump addressed questions from reporters about the plane’s missile-defense capabilities.

“It has a lot of capabilities,” Trump stated regarding the jet, which he began using this month. He added, “But as I understand it, in about a month or so, they’re gonna send it to have it be maxed out. It’ll take about a month.” He did not provide specific details regarding the upgrades.

Earlier this month, Trump opted for a different presidential aircraft for his return from a NATO summit in Turkey, drawing attention and sparking discussions about the decision to not use the Qatari-gifted jet. This change fueled speculation about the readiness of the new Air Force One.

In his communication with the media, Trump dismissed any security concerns but mentioned, “You know the life of a president is very dangerous,” and expressed that he felt vulnerable to threats. NBC News reported that the Secret Service recommended using the older plane for his return from Turkey, citing proximity to the Middle East and heightened tensions with Iran as reasons.

Concerns about the Qatari-gifted Air Force One’s security prompted the Justice Department to subpoena four New York Times journalists who reported on these issues. The Boeing 747-8 jumbo jet was a gift from Qatar’s royal family in 2025, intended for use as the new Air Force One.

In June, Trump welcomed the plane’s arrival at Joint Base Andrews, near Washington. Featuring a red, white, and dark blue color scheme—distinct from the lighter blue of its predecessor—Trump described it as a “flying White House” boasting unprecedented luxury. He expressed, “Nobody tops this one.” He later flew on the jet to North Dakota for a museum event honoring Theodore Roosevelt.

This plane serves as a temporary solution as Boeing works to deliver new-generation Air Force One planes, which are expected in 2028.
