Disneyland has upgraded the Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run ride, an interactive attraction within the “Star Wars” universe. This new version offers improved visuals and participatory actions. Originally introduced in 2019, the ride immerses six participants in the cockpit of the famous Millennium Falcon. While Han Solo is absent, Din Djarin, known as the Mandalorian, and Grogu, often referred to as “Baby Yoda,” now play key roles in the experience.
The latest iteration, aligned with the release of the new film “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” enhances the overall experience of Smugglers Run. Walt Disney Imagineering has incorporated guest feedback to refine the ride and offer more player agency. The creative director, Asa Kalama, states that the team focused on enhancing the interactions among the roles of pilot, gunner, and engineer to expand the teamwork component within the ride.
Previously, Smugglers Run was criticized for its limited storyline and the minimal role of engineering positions. The storyline now offers multiple mission paths, allowing guests to visit “Star Wars” locations such as Coruscant, Bespin, or the Death Star wreckage near Endor. The choice of destination adds an element of surprise and excitement. Engineered using the latest version of Epic’s Unreal Engine, each location is designed with intricate detail.
The flying experience has also been tuned to ensure all guests enjoy a cinematic flight. Kalama explains that regardless of skill level, the new controls make flying the Falcon smoother and more intuitive, reducing frustration from previous iterations.
This narrative begins on Tatooine, leading guests into an invigorating mission with the Mandalorian. The objective is to interrupt dealings between pirates and ex-Imperial officers. Each location presents a distinct visual and emotional adventure. The bustling neon of Coruscant contrasts sharply with the ominous feel of the Endor wreckage.
Guests, particularly those in gunner or engineer positions, will encounter more engaging elements. Grogu, depicted as an unfazed child amid the chaos, makes appearances during the experience. The ride’s enhancements create a richer, more dynamic environment, encouraging guests to choose paths and make decisions actively. Matt Martin, a senior creative executive with Lucasfilm, points out the variety of choices available even within each location, allowing further exploration and adventure.
This upgrade aligns with broader changes at Galaxy’s Edge, where Disney has introduced iconic characters like Darth Vader and Leia, broadening the scope of visitor interaction. The updates keep alive the vision of an interactive theme park environment. Fans and visitors are encouraged to share their experiences and feedback to continue shaping the future of theme park attractions.
