Vice President JD Vance expressed strong disapproval of the Supreme Court’s decision on birthright citizenship during an interview with “The Ingraham Angle.” He described the ruling as “atrocious” and warned it might lead to increased exploitation of the U.S. immigration system.
The Supreme Court struck down former President Donald Trump’s attempt to end birthright citizenship. The Court found that the Constitution guarantees automatic American citizenship for most individuals born in the United States. Vance stated, “This is a very disappointing ruling from the Supreme Court. Of course, we respect it, but we also think that it was a major, major mistake.” He highlighted concerns about people coming to the U.S., giving birth, and obtaining full citizenship benefits for their children and families.
The ruling maintains birthright citizenship for most children born in the U.S., regardless of their parents’ immigration status, opposing the Trump administration’s stance.
Vance noted a “silver lining” in the Court’s narrow opinion, suggesting birthright citizenship is “hanging by a thread.” He acknowledged that many legal experts anticipated a different outcome in the case, possibly a 7-2 or 8-1 decision.
During a news conference, Vance criticized birthright citizenship, calling it a “loophole” that rewards illegal immigrants. The constitutional right has existed for over 150 years in the United States. Vance explained, “I hate to call it birthright citizenship. It’s fundamentally a loophole that now exists in our immigration system that rewards illegal aliens just because they have a baby in the United States while they’re in our country illegally.”
The administration is reportedly considering various strategies to respond to the Supreme Court’s decision. These strategies may involve potential restrictions on U.S. territories such as the Northern Mariana Islands. Concerns have been raised about “birth tourism,” where women from countries like China travel to these islands to give birth and secure U.S. citizenship for their children.
Vance emphasized the need to reduce the impact of the Supreme Court ruling and further improve the immigration system.
Senior officials noted the importance of monitoring entry into the U.S. to prevent abuses of the current system. The administration appears committed to addressing these challenges proactively.
