Recent economic developments have posed significant challenges for the Republican party, just as they were seeing relief on affordability issues. Gas prices soared over $4 per gallon again due to escalated tensions with Iran and the implementation of sweeping new tariffs on multiple countries. These developments occurred just three months before the midterm elections, adding pressure on Republican candidates.
According to AAA, the national average for gas prices surpassed $4 per gallon on Monday, marking a 3% increase in just a week. The escalation of conflict between the United States and Iran pushed oil prices close to $100 a barrel, counteracting any economic respite that had followed a temporary ceasefire in June.
Following the expiration of a temporary 10% global tariff on Friday at midnight, the Trump administration introduced new tariffs ranging from 10% to 12.5% affecting 60 trading partners. These countries account for over 99% of U.S. imports.
The White House Responds
The White House dismissed concerns about these developments being a political risk. A spokesperson stated that as U.S. military efforts limit the capabilities of the Iranian regime, oil and gas prices are expected to return to pre-conflict levels.
President Trump has downplayed the impact of these issues on the midterms, stating that elections do not influence his approach to the war. Despite some public defense from Republican lawmakers, traces of dissent are emerging within the party.
West Virginia Senator Shelley Moore Capito acknowledged public fatigue with the conflict, while Senator Jim Justice called for a resolution, emphasizing the need for an “off-ramp.” Senator Rand Paul expressed his belief that the war has not been successful.
Some Republican representatives have even crossed party lines, supporting a resolution calling for an end to the war. House Speaker Mike Johnson, while defending the campaign’s goals, also advocates for a conclusion to the conflict.
Polling and Public Perception
Polling indicates a substantial share of the population disapproves of Trump’s economic management. A July edition of a Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll showed 65% dissatisfaction, and 66% found groceries unaffordable. A separate Pew survey revealed that 28% of Republican voters view Trump’s policies as harmful, compared to 18% earlier in the year.
Republican strategist Alex Patton suggested a lack of maneuverability for the party amid these challenges. With affordability concerns prominent, any message to defend the party’s economic record may not resonate with voters.
Tariff policy also presents a mixed reaction within the Republican base. While GOP approval remains at 71%, among non-MAGA Republicans, only 43% support the hikes, adding further uncertainty.
Implications for Midterms
The economic situation is acutely felt in battleground districts, where fast-rising gas prices present a challenge for Republican candidates. Of the 13 most competitive House districts, 9 held by Republicans see gas prices rising above the national average.
In California’s 22nd District, prices rose by $1.17 per gallon, putting Republican Representative David Valadao in a difficult position against Democrat Randy Villegas. Similarly in Colorado’s 8th District, the rise of 73 cents a gallon puts pressure on Republican Representative Gabe Evans, who blames local policies for the increase.
Electoral Outlook
Strategist Mike Madrid noted growing fractures within the Republican base due to the Iran conflict. He estimates Trump’s support within the party has decreased by 15% to 16%.
Democratic strategist Jesse Ferguson sees this instability as advantageous for the Democrats, potentially enhancing their economic argument.
Though Democrats lead Republicans in generic ballot polls, structural elements like redistricting and gerrymandering provide a GOP buffer. With midterms approaching, these challenges test the party’s ability to alter the narrative within the limited time available.
