On Friday, President Donald Trump addressed the ongoing cyclospora outbreak during a press event. The outbreak has sickened at least 4,173 people, as reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), with 308 individuals hospitalized. Thousands of other cases remain under investigation.
Federal investigations have linked many of these cases to shredded iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico. Health officials continue to explore whether other contaminated produce may also be contributing to the outbreak. Cyclospora is known for causing severe gastrointestinal distress and is often associated with fresh produce. These outbreaks can be challenging to resolve as symptoms might not appear immediately after consumption.
This was the first occasion President Trump publicly commented on the outbreak. Fox News senior White House correspondent Peter Doocy asked, “There’s this nasty parasite that’s giving people in nine states explosive diarrhea. When is it going to be safe to eat lettuce again?”
President Trump humorously replied, “I don’t know, I haven’t thought about it. This is the first time I’ve been asked that question. Are you eating lettuce recently?” His light-hearted response was met with laughter from the audience. He added that “nobody wants to ask that question.” His remarks followed a statement from the White House, which claimed they are managing the outbreak.
This situation continues to develop, and updates are anticipated as further information becomes available.
