Pete Buttigieg Discusses Political Change and Democratic Spectrum
Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg joined ‘America Reports’ to share his views on the Trump administration’s actions related to Iran. He discussed the possible consequences for foreign policy and national security. Buttigieg also reviewed the status of political institutions in the U.S., raising concerns about democratic principles, power distribution, and how the government addresses both domestic and international issues.
Buttigieg, who might run for the 2028 presidential election, received criticism from a former RNC chairman. The criticism arose when he avoided condemning the growing socialism in the Democratic Party. Instead, he identified himself as a ‘Buttigieg Democrat.’ During the ‘America Reports’ on Friday, Buttigieg did not directly deal with Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) policies, such as abolishing the Senate or ending deportations. He criticized Donald Trump’s foreign policy and economic performance instead.
“Look, there’s always going to be some people in my party who go too far for me, people I disagree with. If you pick the five or ten or fifteen furthest-left people in our party, they’re going to, by definition, disagree with a lot of others. But there’s so much that we do, in fact, agree on,” Buttigieg stated.
Buttigieg emphasized the need for change within political systems. He remarked on the appeal of candidates who promise disruption, whether from the left like DSA candidates or figures like Donald Trump. Buttigieg noted that the existing system feels outdated and inadequate.
A University of New Hampshire Granite State Poll recently showed Buttigieg tied with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in a potential 2028 election matchup. Ocasio-Cortez addressed questions about DSA proposals by referring to them as ‘constitutional questions’ and acknowledged widespread concerns.
“I’m a Pete Buttigieg Democrat. I think I’m a common-sense Democrat, but of course everybody thinks that their ideas are common sense to them,” Buttigieg mentioned regarding his position within the Democratic spectrum.
Reince Priebus, a Fox News political analyst and former RNC chairman, argued that Buttigieg avoided confronting the socialist faction of the Democrats. He criticized the former Secretary for appearing to align with more extreme party elements.
Recent electoral successes for Democratic Socialists in states like New York and Colorado have sparked discussions. Melat Kiros, representing the DSA, pulled off a surprise win over a long-standing Democratic representative in Colorado. In New York, left-wing candidates supported by Democratic socialist leaders won their primary elections.
Buttigieg clarified that he is not currently seeking the presidency. He stated, “I’m not running for anything. I’m helping people who are.” He highlighted the importance of the upcoming election, acknowledging issues like gas prices and healthcare that affect daily life. Buttigieg mentioned that some voters, preferring a Republican presidency, now consider voting for Democrats to ensure checks and balances in Congress.
