Representative Thomas Massie, a Republican known for his occasional disagreements with former President Trump, is currently facing a strong challenge from Trump-endorsed Ed Gallrein. The contest is unfolding in Kentucky’s Fourth Congressional District and is seen as a test of Trump’s influence within the party.
Massie was recently seen at a public event close to the Boone County Courthouse in Burlington, Kentucky. A young boy approached him with a piece of Pez candy. Massie accepted the candy, saying with a smile, “You know, President Trump hands out endorsements like you hand out candy. Just not to me.”
This remark highlights the tension between Massie and Trump, who supports Gallrein as payback for Massie’s past defiance. Massie has opposed Trump’s tax legislation, which he felt was not economical enough. He has also voted repeatedly against military action in Iran and criticized aid to Israel.
Massie’s stance on these issues, particularly leading efforts to release the Epstein files against Trump’s wishes, has stoked Trump’s ire. Trump has called Massie a “moron,” “loser,” and “total disaster,” and is determined to have him replaced by Gallrein, a dairy farmer and retired Navy SEAL captain.
For the first time since he took office in 2012, Massie faces consequential opposition. Although his campaign’s internal polling claims the race is tight, some public polls indicate Gallrein has taken the lead.
