Cubs Secure Victory Over Pirates with Stellar Defense
On a typical night, the Chicago Cubs showcase impressive defensive skills. On a recent Friday night, Ian Happ and Nico Hoerner delivered crucial defensive plays that helped the Cubs secure a 3-2 victory against the Pittsburgh Pirates in 10 innings at PNC Park.
Left-hander Matthew Boyd played a pivotal role, allowing only one run over seven innings. Pete Crow-Armstrong contributed with a solo home run in the sixth inning. This marked his 22nd homer of the season and tied the game.
The Cubs’ victory was decided in the top of the 10th inning. Dansby Swanson’s RBI single and Seiya Suzuki’s bases-loaded walk secured the two runs needed. Manager Craig Counsell praised the team’s defensive prowess, stating, “Both plays made the difference in the game, showcasing our ability to perform in crucial moments.”
Without Hoerner’s diving stop in the third inning, the Pirates might have taken the lead. By preventing a ball hit by Nick Gonzales from reaching the outfield, he thwarted a potential run. Hoerner’s quick thinking and throw led to a key out that kept Bryan Reynolds, the Pirates’ top hitter, from seizing the opportunity.
Hoerner reflected on the play: “I knew they were sending him home, so I acted quickly. Alex Bregman completed the play with a great tag.”
In another highlight, Happ exhibited a stellar defensive play in the same inning. He threw out Henry Davis at home when the Pirates attempted to score on a fly ball. This inning-ending double play underscored Happ’s defensive skills; he holds the lead with four outfield assists this season among National League left fielders.
Happ shared his perspective, saying, “I gave it all I had since it was a crucial situation. Carson Kelly’s excellent tag made the play successful.”
Boyd expressed his admiration for the team’s defense, stating, “I’ve never experienced playing in front of such a talented defense. Their consistency and intelligence on the field are exceptional.”
Since Boyd’s return from the injured list, he has consistently delivered strong performances. In six starts since June 25, Boyd holds a 2.31 era, pitching into the seventh inning in two out of his last three games.
Boyd’s escape from a bases-loaded jam in the fifth inning highlighted his resilience. Despite allowing a run that put the Pirates ahead, he ended the frame without further damage.
Happ acknowledged Boyd’s contribution, “He’s an experienced pitcher. We trust him to deliver when needed. His hard work after the knee injury shows in his performance.”
