Maria Kang’s Health Journey: Lesson from Colon Cancer
Maria Kang, known for her dedication to fitness and wellness, unexpectedly faced colon cancer. Despite following a healthy lifestyle, the California mother of three received a diagnosis that transformed her understanding of health.
In 2013, Kang gained attention with a photo of her fit physique alongside her young sons, sparking global discussions on fitness and motherhood. This image led to her being recognized as the ‘No Excuse Mom’ and inspired wellness communities worldwide.
Everything changed in November 2023 when Kang was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. ‘It was a complete shock because I was the healthiest person I knew,’ she shared. Despite eating well, filtering water, and staying active, she couldn’t find a reason for the illness. Her history of digestive issues, including chronic constipation and bloating, had been normalized in her life.
Following her diagnosis, Kang tried holistic methods for 12 weeks, which did not reduce the tumor. She then started FOLFOX chemotherapy in 2024. After chemotherapy began to shrink the tumor, a decision was made to stop the treatment and opt for surgery. The surgery removed a significant portion of her colon, multiple reproductive organs, and her appendix. Post-surgery, she required both a colostomy and later an ileostomy.
Today, MRIs show no suspicious masses, although regular monitoring continues. The American Cancer Society predicts a rise in colorectal cancer cases, with increasing rates among younger individuals. They recommend regular screenings starting at age 45, earlier if risks are present.
Kang’s experience has redefined her view of health. ‘Looking healthy doesn’t mean you are healthy,’ she noted, acknowledging the unpredictability of wellness. She now embraces a lifestyle where balance is key, enjoying walking and dance without forcing any activity. Her dietary habits have evolved to prioritize balance, favoring nutritious foods without rigid restrictions.
Kang advises that leading a healthy lifestyle doesn’t guarantee freedom from illness. ‘Health is not just appearance. It’s about how you feel,’ she emphasized.
For those experiencing persistent bowel habit changes, blood in the stool, abdominal pain, or unexplained weight loss, the American Cancer Society recommends consulting a healthcare provider.
