Michael Kim’s Historic Round at the 3M Open

Michael Kim made a memorable mark at the 3M Open, achieving a notable accomplishment on Friday. The 33-year-old golfer came close to joining an elite group with just the 16th sub-60 round in PGA Tour history. Approaching the final hole, Kim’s wedge shot on the par-5 18th ended on the green’s fringe, 24 feet away from a historic birdie.

Focused on his putt, Kim reminded himself of one thing: avoid falling short. As he lined up, Kim aimed to ensure the ball reached the hole, which it did. Celebration followed as he expressed his joy with energetic fist pumps.

Kim understood the significance of the final holes. He was determined to earn his place in the record books through skillful play rather than luck. “This is the way, this is the moment to get into the history books,” he said, motivating himself.

His performance included multiple successful runs. Beginning with hole three, Kim secured five consecutive birdies, then parred the eighth. He added three more birdies across the next four holes and finished with four consecutive birdies.

Kim’s putting was remarkable. Out of 11 birdies, eight were from over ten feet. He described the satisfaction when putts went as planned, consistently experiencing this joy throughout the round.

With this achievement, Kim advanced to a three-shot lead over Ben Kohles, acknowledging that more golf remains. “Today was an awesome day, but still, I’m only halfway there,” he said, focusing on the upcoming weekend.

His round of 59 is the fourth on tour since 2024. Jake Knapp had the last sub-60 round during the 2025 Cognizant Classic. Jim Furyk holds the PGA Tour record with a 58 during the 2016 Travelers Championship.
