Fourth Firefighter Dies from Injuries in Colorado Wildfire

A fourth firefighter has died due to burn injuries sustained while battling the Knowles wildfire in western Colorado. Nathan Matthews, aged 43 from Lincoln, Nebraska, passed away following the incident, according to a statement from the U.S. Department of the Interior.

U.S. Wildland Fire Service Chief Brian Fennessy expressed deep sorrow over the loss, stating, “This is another heartbreaking loss for our wildland fire family.” The tragedy follows the deaths of three other firefighters who were responding to the Knowles blaze.

The wildfire, exacerbated by swift-moving flames and strong winds, resulted in dangerous and unpredictable conditions. Five firefighters were caught in a burnover, a situation where rapid fire spread obstructs escape routes, during initial attack operations on the fire.

The Knowles Fire, which ignited near Mesa County’s Knowles Canyon, was overtaken by the Snyder Fire that started in Utah. The Snyder Fire has since spread across the Colorado border along the Colorado-Utah border, now consuming over 28,000 acres.

Emily Barker, 38, Nick Hutcherson, 27, and Sydney Watson, 27, part of the Rifle Helitack crew, died on the scene during initial attack operations. Fennessy remarked, “We mourn the loss of Nate while continuing to grieve the deaths of Emily, Nick and Sydney. Our hearts are with their families, friends, crewmates, and everyone impacted by this tragedy.”

Matthews received medical care for his burns before his passing. The name of the fifth firefighter involved in the incident has not yet been disclosed.

Fennessy emphasized their commitment to honoring the legacy of all four firefighters, stating, “We remain committed to supporting those affected and honoring the legacy of all four firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.”
