India’s Education Minister Resigns Amid Student Protests
In Mumbai, a protester displayed a placard after India’s Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, stepped down following widespread protests. The protests, part of the Cockroach Janta Party movement, expanded from New Delhi to over a dozen cities, addressing student frustrations with the government.
Students accused Pradhan of responsibility for exam paper leaks that affected millions vying for university seats or government jobs. The protests marked a significant challenge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. Initially ignored, protesters were later criticized by the education minister, who labeled them as ‘the B team of terrorists,’ reported The Hindu. Additionally, pro-government media suggested connections to Pakistan.
In his resignation letter posted on X, Pradhan mentioned that he did not want students’ anger exploited by ‘anti-national forces,’ without elaboration. He stopped short of an apology for the paper leaks.
Protesters’ Reactions
The resignation fueled celebration among protesting students near the main site in New Delhi. Abhijeet Dipke, leader of the satirical ‘Cockroach Janta Party,’ jubilantly announced their success. However, students maintained further demands, including compensation for families of students who died by suicide following leaked medical entrance exams. The Indian Express reported at least a dozen such cases.
Protesters also called for accountability from security forces involved in violent clashes with demonstrators near Parliament earlier that week.
Protests Gain Traction
Pradhan’s resignation indicated a shift in government tactics. Protests commenced in New Delhi on June 7, gaining traction across demographic lines. India boasts a sizable young population, around 367 million aged 15 to 29, with education serving as a unifier, noted sociologist Raheel Dhattiwala. Political commentator Sushant Singh highlighted the difficulty in demonizing such diverse protestors.
Participants like brothers Rishabh and Mohit, aged 23 and 22 respectively, traveled distances to join protests. They cited concerns over exam paper leaks and fairness in educational opportunities, stressing disparities faced by economically disadvantaged students.
Beyond Exam Leaks
The protests also responded to derogatory remarks by India’s Chief Justice, Surya Kant, who referred to unemployed youth as ‘cockroaches.’ Dipke’s formation of the ‘Cockroach Janta Party’ was a direct response, garnering endorsements from figures like author Arundhati Roy.
Hunger Strike and Government Response
Protests intensified when police removed hunger-striking educator Sonam Wangchuk from the protest site. He ended his 26-day fast, receiving promises of government accountability regarding the exam system.
Support for student protests strengthened even as police actions led to widespread detention. Prime Minister Modi addressed the situation, promising consequences for those involved in leaks, yet omitted addressing Pradhan’s role. Protesters demanded further concessions, threatening more demonstrations if unmet. Although the education minister’s resignation was secured, the durability of the students’ momentum remains to be seen.
