Carly Simon Reveals Parkinson’s Diagnosis and Health Challenges

Carly Simon, the renowned singer-songwriter, has announced her diagnosis with Parkinson’s disease. After years of declining mobility, she shared this news in a statement on Monday. Simon, 83, is celebrated for her classic hits such as “You’re So Vain” and “Nobody Does It Better.” She initially thought her mobility issues stemmed from arthritis and recent joint replacement surgeries. Despite undergoing surgeries on one hip and both knees, her mobility issues persisted.

“At times, I could not walk without considerable help,” Simon explained, noting that her family eventually suspected a deeper issue. Following extensive tests at the Mayo Clinic, doctors diagnosed her with Parkinson’s disease.

Simon stated she took time to process her condition before going public with her diagnosis. “It has taken me some time to understand the diagnosis, to adjust to it, and to decide how much I wanted to say about it publicly,” she shared. She emphasized the unpredictable nature of Parkinson’s disease, acknowledging the unique experience each person faces with this neurological disorder.

She described symptoms of extreme fatigue, stating, “Some days I’m so tired I can’t get the day moving at all. On others, it gives me a little more room to move, think, work, and feel like myself.” Simon has begun treatment, including medication to reduce stiffness and other symptoms, but affirmed the disorder’s unpredictable nature. “There is no tidy or predictable schedule to the illness,” Simon commented. “It does not consult my calendar before deciding what kind of day I am going to have.”

The Parkinson’s Foundation reports about 1 million Americans live with this condition, which affects movement due to the loss of dopamine-producing brain cells. Symptoms often include tremors, slow movement, muscle stiffness, balance, and speech difficulties. There is no cure presently, though treatment can help manage the symptoms.

Additionally, Simon disclosed recent treatment for basal cell carcinoma on her face. The skin cancer was removed surgically, but the procedure altered her appearance and influenced her decision to retreat from public life.

In spite of these challenges, Simon finds solace and purpose in her music. She is preparing to release her new album, Comes in Waves, on August 14. It will be her first collection of original songs since 2008. “It reminded me that illness can change your life without becoming the whole of your life,” she expressed.
