T-Mobile and Verizon Face Widespread Outages

Many T-Mobile and Verizon customers across the U.S. faced phone service disruptions on Monday afternoon. Reports of outages surged, with many users receiving SOS alerts indicating a lack of service. By 8:40 p.m. ET, reports had dropped to fewer than 7,000 on DownDetector from over 60,000 at 5:06 p.m. ET.

DownDetector highlighted New York City, Columbia (South Carolina), Springfield (Ohio), Chicago, Detroit, and Minneapolis as major areas of complaint. Verizon users also experienced issues, though to a lesser extent compared to T-Mobile, and a Verizon post stated their network functioned normally, suspecting T-Mobile’s problems as the cause.

AT&T users reported issues, but these diminished quickly. On social media, T-Mobile confirmed they were working to resolve technical challenges. The situation was prioritized to restore connectivity swiftly.

Understanding SOS Alerts

When an iPhone shows “SOS” or “SOS Only,” it indicates the phone isn’t on its usual network but can call emergency services through another network. This feature ensures emergency contact like 911 is still possible even without regular service. Such alerts can arise from network outages, poor reception, or SIM issues. While in SOS mode, normal phone functions are disrupted until the regular network is restored.

Outage Maps

Maps from DownDetector tracked significant outages in major cities such as Seattle, West Sacramento, Irvine, Albuquerque, Orlando, and St. Louis. Verizon’s issues were displayed through scattered user complaints reported over a day, flagged when complaints exceeded the norm.

Expert Analysis

Roger Entner, from Recon Analytics, indicated that large-scale disruptions likely stem from core network issues, not localized ones. These are often triggered by network upgrades. Entner explained that engineers first attempt to identify the issue within 10-15 minutes, known as the triage window, and then roll back any changes potentially causing the outage.

According to Entner, distinguishing between localized and core outages is challenging for consumers, as the outcome remains the same: phones fail to connect. He remarked that while outages are rare, they occur across all carriers periodically.
