Hurricane Genevieve and Tropical Storm Fausto in the Pacific

Genevieve was anticipated to vary in strength before diminishing later in the week. Satellite images revealed Hurricane Fausto at the center and Hurricane Genevieve on the right off Mexico’s southwest coast over the Pacific Ocean.

Hurricane Genevieve

Hurricane Genevieve was a major storm in the Pacific Ocean, far from land on Monday evening. It followed the weakening Tropical Storm Fausto, which was creating large surf in Hawaii. Genevieve briefly became a Category 5 hurricane early Monday, as reported by the National Hurricane Center, marking the first in the East Pacific in two years. The hurricane was expected to remain far from land, roughly parallel to Mexico’s coast.

Genevieve had maximum sustained winds reaching 145 mph (230 kph), as noted by the hurricane center in Miami. The center of the hurricane was about 505 miles (810 kilometers) southwest of the southern tip of Baja California peninsula, moving northwest at 12 mph (19 kph). Although no coastal watches or warnings were issued, the center warned of swells from the storm impacting parts of Mexico’s southwestern coast and the Baja California peninsula. These swells could cause life-threatening surf and rip currents. Genevieve was expected to fluctuate in its intensity before weakening as the week progressed.

Tropical Storm Fausto

Elsewhere in the Pacific, Hurricane Fausto had weakened into a tropical storm by Monday evening, heading in the general direction of the Hawaiian Islands. Forecasters predicted that Fausto would pass north of Hawaii, but residents were advised to monitor the storm’s progress due to potential impacts.

Increasing surf and strong currents were affecting east-facing shores across Hawaii, according to the hurricane center. Fausto had maximum sustained winds of 70 mph (110 kph). The storm was centered approximately 415 miles (670 kilometers) east-northeast of Hilo, Hawaii, moving west-northwest at 16 mph (26 kph).
