Adam Ramsay-Peaty: Navigating New Waters in Swimming

During the 2026 Commonwealth Games, the announcement of a bronze medal for England’s Adam Ramsay-Peaty echoed twice: first in the 100m breaststroke final and again in the 50m race. For most athletes, bronze signifies a notable achievement. However, for Ramsay-Peaty, with 51 career medals, including only 19 non-gold, this had a different weight. The Commonwealths, drawing participants from the Commonwealth of Nations and their territories, hold less prestige than the Olympics or World Championships.

The name ‘Ramsay-Peaty’ stood out during those announcements at Glasgow’s Tollcross swimming pool. When he was Adam Peaty, he was considered one of the greatest English swimmers and perhaps the best breaststroker ever. He claimed back-to-back Olympic golds in the 100m breaststroke in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020, breaking 14 world records, with two still standing in the 50m and 100m breaststroke.

In recent years, Ramsay-Peaty’s journey has faced challenges. A six-month mental health break in 2023 led to a silver in Paris 2024 for the 100m event. More personal matters have unfolded in the spotlight, particularly a public family drama involving his engagement to Holly Ramsay. He was previously married to Welsh artist Eirianedd Munro, with whom he has a son, George. Ramsay-Peaty and Holly Ramsay, the daughter of chef Gordon Ramsay, married in December 2025 and adopted a double-barrelled surname. The couple is expecting their first child together.

Their marriage attracted media attention not only for the individuals involved but also due to tensions between the Ramsay-Peaty and Ramsay families. Gordon Ramsay expressed upset over the media portrayal and alleged grievances stemming from unaired family misunderstandings, as he mentioned to the Daily Mail.

Ramsay-Peaty prefers to stay reserved about the controversy, telling BBC Sport that adopting the double-barrelled surname represents his personal growth. He reflected on transitioning from a carefree young athlete to a family-oriented individual facing new responsibilities.

In conversations about his in-laws, Ramsay-Peaty praised Gordon Ramsay’s achievements and work ethic. He finds inspiration in the chef’s success in multiple fields, as noted in his comments to The Times. Ramsay-Peaty’s own swimming career has included moments of fatigue and introspection. In March 2023, he announced his withdrawal from the British Swimming Championships, citing a lack of enjoyment and motivation for the sport he once thrived in.

He later revealed struggles with depression and alcohol abuse, compounded by a metatarsal fracture in 2022. Despite the challenges, Ramsay-Peaty spoke of his perseverance to reporters in Glasgow after winning a bronze medal. His sights remain set on qualifying for the 2028 L.A. Olympics, despite early starts, the demands of training, and social media attacks.

After narrowly missing gold to Australia’s Sam Williamson, Ramsay-Peaty expressed hope for a chance at Olympic gold at age 33. The newly introduced 50m breaststroke event will provide him an opportunity to compete for prestigious medals once more. However, as he assesses the recent Commonwealth Games results, the reflection is one of arduous effort and introspection.

Entering his 11th professional year, Ramsay-Peaty’s journey in swimming showcases the human element behind athletic achievements. While his name may have changed, his determination and high standards remain clear, shaping the next phase of his storied career.
