Trapped in Shopping Mall After Earthquake
Following a powerful earthquake in southern Japan, several individuals remain trapped inside a shopping mall. The local fire department reports the situation is critical at the partially destroyed AEON Mall. According to state broadcaster NHK, an explosion was heard on the mall’s second floor. Footage from the scene shows about a dozen fire trucks in the facility’s parking area. Images also depict the mall’s collapsed ceilings and the surrounding roads strewn with debris.
Early Impact of the 7.1 Earthquake
Passengers now fill JR Hakata Station in Fukuoka as bullet train services have been halted due to the 7.1-magnitude quake. Images from Kumamoto Prefecture show fallen shelves and office equipment. In Kumamoto City, an exterior wall of a store has collapsed.
Aerial Footage of Damaged Buildings
State broadcaster NHK reports at least 12 buildings have collapsed, with four locations where individuals are still trapped. Most damage occurred in Yatsushiro, a city within Kumamoto Prefecture. Aerial views reveal a commercial facility and mall in Kumamoto with significant structural damage. Additionally, pillars at a local shrine have fallen and a separate building has caught fire as a result of the earthquake. At least seven fires have been documented in Kumamoto Prefecture.
Details of the Earthquake
The earthquake struck southern Japan on Tuesday, causing a train derailment, numerous injuries, and a regional tsunami warning. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.1 and occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers. It reached the highest level on the seismic intensity scale. The earthquake occurred at approximately 4:27 p.m. local time. A tsunami advisory for the Ariake and Yatsushiro Seas was issued immediately after but was later removed as reported by NHK.
