Tony Romo’s Arrest for Operating While Intoxicated Detailed in Police Footage

Tony Romo faced police questioning during his arrest for operating while intoxicated on July 23 in Wisconsin. The police bodycam footage, now released, shows the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback interacting with officers.

Romo informed the arresting officer that he was returning from a golf course and claimed to have consumed no alcohol. He requested to contact his attorney. When asked to exit his vehicle, Romo questioned the officer, saying, “Because I’m coming from a golf course, you think I’m drunk?”

Police took Romo to a nearby station for field sobriety tests. The officer noted red, glassy eyes and the scent of alcohol on him. Romo refused a breath test, citing legal advice against it.

Romo received a citation for first-offense operating while intoxicated and opting out of a chemical test. He is scheduled to appear in court on September 21.

Following his round at the Wisconsin Amateur Golf Championship, Romo’s vehicle was stopped on an interstate. He was to participate in the M&P Group Texas State Open but withdrew after the arrest.

Romo retired from professional football in 2017 and transitioned into a broadcasting career with CBS as a commentator. He was the starting quarterback for the Cowboys from 2006 to 2015, but injuries in 2016 led to Dak Prescott becoming the starter. Over his career, Romo achieved 34,183 passing yards, 248 touchdowns, and 117 interceptions with a 65.3% completion rate. He was a Pro Bowl honoree four times and tied for third in the MVP voting in 2014.

In the playoffs, Romo went 2-4 and is remembered for a fumbled snap against the Seattle Seahawks. Post-retirement, he joined Jim Nantz at CBS and has called three Super Bowls, including the one where the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers.

Romo has not yet addressed the arrest publicly.
