Tragic Death of California Grandmother Leads to Murder Charges
A California grandmother, Theresa Jones, went missing after she failed to collect her grandchild, triggering a search that concluded with her body being found in her car in a church parking lot. Her son, Emmanuel Wesley, 23, from Santa Ana, now faces murder charges.
Authorities accuse Wesley of shooting his 61-year-old mother twice in the back while she was in her vehicle outside the Fullerton Police Department on July 4. He allegedly moved her body into the passenger seat and drove away. Concerns arose on July 7 when Jones did not pick up her grandchild and stopped responding to calls from family members.
“The death of any human being is a tragedy,” stated Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer. “For someone to kill their own mother is another level of depravity.”
On July 11, officers discovered Jones’ body inside her abandoned vehicle in a Fullerton church parking lot. Surveillance footage reportedly captured the events, showing her arriving at the police department with Wesley in the back seat. The video shows her slumping forward before Wesley allegedly pushed her into the passenger seat, took control of the vehicle, and left the scene.
Jones’ family described her as a devoted Christian, passionate about her children and grandchildren. A GoFundMe page set up to aid with funeral costs reflects the family’s grief and admiration for her. They wrote about her vibrant personality, stating, “To know Theresa was to love her.” She was affectionately nicknamed “Cardi B” for her lively nature.
The page recounts the family’s distressing search after Jones’s unexpected disappearance, concluding with the painful discovery a week later. “We want to honor the beautiful life Theresa lived,” they wrote, expressing the profound impact her loss has had on all who knew her.
Wesley has entered a plea of not guilty and remains detained without bail. If found guilty of murder and the firearm enhancement, he faces a potential sentence of 50 years to life in prison.
