D.C. Lawmakers Surprised by Proposed Bill on Tax Initiatives

Local lawmakers expressed surprise at a recent proposal from the House Oversight chair. The proposed legislation would mandate congressional approval for any tax initiative in Washington, D.C.

Rep. James Comer, a Republican from Kentucky, introduced the bill three months before the midterm elections. These elections will play a key role in determining if Republicans maintain control of the House and if Comer remains as the chair of the Oversight committee.

Previously, D.C. officials had seen Rep. Comer as a Republican they could collaborate with. This belief was supported by his active backing of the Washington Commanders’ return to a refurbished RFK Stadium.
