Ahnaleigh Wilson, a high school athlete from Washington state, unwittingly found herself at the center of a heated debate over women’s sports. The spotlight turned on her following an incident at a WNBA game which led to the suspension of Seattle Storm co-owner, Celeste Keaton.
According to Wilson and her family, who spoke exclusively with Fox News Digital, Keaton allegedly berated Wilson during a game where she was supporting player Sophie Cunningham. Wilson had been there to back Cunningham’s public stance on women’s sports.
Wilson recounted the situation, explaining how Keaton’s words left her stunned and emotional. “I was not prepared for the public attention,” she said. The experience, she shared, was particularly sensitive given her past encounters in sports competitions against biological male transgender athletes.
“I’ve actually experienced this more than once. Competing against biological males has been challenging and personal for me,” Wilson said.
The controversy escalated after the incident went viral, catching the attention of news outlets nationwide. Wilson’s father, Brendan, noted that the family anticipated some attention but were surprised by the national spotlight. Strangers began to hurl insults online, despite many supporters also emerging.
“We knew a photo might get around, not this level of attention,” Brendan said. Wilson’s mother, Elizabeth, added that the negative comments had been difficult, but their family tried to stay grounded in their Christian faith.
The incident at the WNBA game also highlighted broader issues in the ongoing debate about women’s sports. Wilson stressed her support for fairness in competition, not opposition to transgender individuals.
“I care about fairness in sports,” Wilson highlighted. “My stand is about competitive fairness, not a disagreement with transgender identities.”
The Seattle Storm issued a public apology, confirming Keaton’s suspension and fine following the backlash. However, the Wilson family believes a direct apology to Wilson and her friend is still warranted.
“Accountability is important, and direct acknowledgment is needed,” Elizabeth urged.
Despite the challenges, the family found solace in support from Cunningham, who acknowledged the teens’ courage and integrity.
“Cunningham’s post was reassuring for my daughter,” said Elizabeth. “Her promise of gifts and her statement were a significant relief.”
The family expressed gratitude for the league’s decisive actions but are adamant about not attending any future Seattle Storm games.
