Investigation Continues in Kidnapping Case of Nancy Guthrie

Local authorities released two ransom notes claiming to be from those who abducted Nancy Guthrie in Arizona earlier this year. The release aims to gather new leads.

The second note, dated February 6, was sent to a Tucson news outlet. It claimed that Guthrie, age 84, passed away shortly after her abduction, citing heart-related issues. The note added, “She is buried in nature now. Nothing you could have done could have changed the outcome. We want your family to know this and hope you all can find peace. We are truly sorry.” Guthrie was the mother of “TODAY” co-host Savannah Guthrie and went missing from her residence near Tucson on February 1. The FBI is treating her disappearance as a kidnapping for ransom.

The first note, sent four days prior to the same CBS-affiliated outlet, mentioned a white smart watch found at her bedside and a damaged backyard floodlight. This note demanded $4 million in bitcoin by February 5. It later increased the ransom to $6 million if payment was not made by 5 p.m. on February 9. The note also stated, “Her life is in your hands. Do not play games, law enforcement will not be able to help you.”

“The distinctive linguistic characteristics may be recognizable to someone who knows or has interacted with the notes’ writer,” the release mentions.

A news release from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department accompanied the notes with hopes of generating new leads. Authorities noted a “unique linguistic style,” highlighting distinct word choice, syntax, and phraseology. This may provide crucial insight into the motivations and evolving tone of the writer over time. The department urged anyone who recognizes these patterns or knows the writer to come forward.

Recently, Savannah Guthrie made an emotional online appeal to the alleged abductor, pleading for her mother’s return. In a social media video, she stated, “Our family is in agony. We are in a nightmare that will not end. Nothing about our situation has changed. We will never stop looking for her.” She beseeched the person responsible to “do the right thing,” adding, “Help us bring this situation to an end.”
