Brittney Griner, a notable WNBA athlete, has filed for divorce from her wife, Cherelle Griner. The filing was made in Georgia’s Fulton County, according to reports from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
The couple, who married in 2018, have decided to end their eight-year relationship. They are the parents of a two-year-old son. According to court documents, the separation date was cited as July 24, with Brittney Griner describing the marriage as “irretrievably broken.”
Griner’s history includes a significant legal event. In February 2022, she was detained in Russia due to being found in possession of vape cartridges containing cannabis oil. She faced charges of smuggling narcotic substances into Russia and received a nine-year sentence in a Russian penal colony. During her imprisonment, Cherelle Griner, an attorney, played a crucial role in advocating for Brittney’s release.
Brittney Griner’s ordeal came to an end in December 2022 following a U.S.-Russia prisoner exchange.
