President Donald Trump has introduced new uncertainty into the upcoming Senate confirmation vote for his attorney general nominee, Todd Blanche. Trump’s recent actions have highlighted his interest in compensating supporters who feel unjustly persecuted.
Trump’s Social Media Announcement
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated he would continue with Blanche as acting Attorney General and pursue the creation of an “Anti-Weaponization Fund.” This decision comes if Sens. John Cornyn of Texas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina do not support Blanche as the nominee. Blanche was involved in Trump’s defense during four indictments.
Senators’ Concerns
Cornyn and Tillis have expressed opposition to Blanche’s nomination due to a lawsuit settlement that established a $1.8 billion fund. This fund compensates individuals who feel mistreated by the criminal justice system and provides immunity to Trump and his family from tax audits. Despite announcements suggesting the fund is “dead,” concerns remain.
Senate Judiciary Committee’s Actions
Sen. Chuck Grassley, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, postponed a vote on Blanche’s confirmation, rescheduling it before the August recess. This delay allows further time for discussions and attempts to secure support for Blanche as the attorney general.
Trump’s Comments and Senatorial Responses
Trump criticized Cornyn and Tillis, linking their elections losses to his refusal to endorse them. Tillis, who is retiring, responded by emphasizing Trump’s inconsistency on the fund issue. He warned against creating another fund or urging Congress to support a bill that most Senate Republicans oppose.
In a previous hearing, Blanche indicated the anti-weaponization fund would not progress after Republican senators stalled an immigration funding bill. Yet Cornyn and Tillis seek assurances to prevent a policy reversal and to clarify Trump’s exemption from tax audits.
Additional Concerns
Cornyn seeks written confirmation that audit exemptions are limited to litigation parties and are retrospective only. Language from the Department of Justice indicates Blanche’s order to establish the fund was rescinded and invalid. Senators are eager to receive formal documentation for clarity and assurance.
