FDA Investigates Cyclospora Outbreak Linked to Lettuce
The FDA is actively investigating a cyclospora outbreak traced to iceberg lettuce from central Mexico. Taylor Farms, a major supplier, has recalled their products in 27 states and stopped imports for the season. Over 1,600 cases have been reported in five Midwestern states, according to the CDC.
Affected American farmers are facing significant challenges. A Salinas Valley lettuce farmer reported to the Wall Street Journal that he discarded 300,000 pounds of romaine hearts despite no evidence of infection in his crops. This decision highlights the outbreak’s widespread impact, causing explosive diarrhea in thousands of people across nearly every state.
Coastline Family Farms, a supplier to major stores and restaurants, has seen a 30% drop in demand for lettuce. The region, known as America’s Salad Bowl, usually provides half of the nation’s lettuce. “It’s incredibly demoralizing,” the farmer stated, expressing regret over the lost crop. Still, he remains hopeful, emphasizing the need to move forward amid setbacks.
The outbreak, linked to Taylor Farms’ iceberg lettuce, has impacted the entire industry. Consumers are cautious, skipping lettuce and other vegetables like cauliflower, carrots, and spinach. Packaged salad mixes and salad dressings have also experienced a downturn in sales.
Joelle Mosso from Western Growers noted uncertainty among consumers, leading to decreased consumption. Viraj Puri of Gotham Greens supports the health benefits of fruits and vegetables, hoping consumer trust returns.
Nationally, lettuce sales dropped by nearly 9% between mid-June and July compared to last year, equivalent to 7.6 million pounds of lettuce, according to NielsenIQ. The outbreak, linked to lettuces served at Taco Bell, led to sales falling by 25% at the chain in one week.
While some consumers seek safer options at local farmers markets, many are choosing to pause on buying vegetables altogether. As investigations continue, the focus remains on restoring consumer confidence in produce safety.
