Teen Lifeguard Honored for Brave Ocean Rescue

Ryder Williams, a 16-year-old lifeguard from Santa Cruz, California, gained recognition for saving a child from dangerous rip tides and powerful surf. The boy’s father, Sumit Rai, expressed his gratitude for Williams’ bravery, noting that the rescue at Seabright State Beach was life-saving.

Rai shared that he received a distressing call from his 10-year-old son, Nathaniel, who had been swept into the ocean. After being knocked down by a wave, Nathaniel was pulled into deep water roughly 15 yards from the shore.

Witnesses reported that Williams’ efforts were prolonged and intense, surpassing what the viral video captured. President Donald Trump acknowledged the young lifeguard’s actions and suggested he should receive a national honor at the White House.

The high surf advisory at the beach saw waves reaching up to 10 feet. Williams, stationed at Tower 2, noticed Nathaniel struggling. With urgency, he abandoned his equipment, grabbed a buoy, and dove in to save the boy. Despite the harsh waves, he held on to Nathaniel until fellow lifeguard Aaron Bohnen joined him.

Rai commented on the difficulty of carrying Nathaniel, who weighed about 100 pounds, through the waves. Rai stated, “There is no way I could ever repay him. Without Williams, my son wouldn’t be alive.”

Once the lifeguards brought Nathaniel to shore, they checked him for injuries. Though Rai was not vacationing with his children, he expressed immense relief and outlined his gratitude toward Williams.

Following the rescue, national attention grew. Rai, speaking to media, backed any award or recognition for Williams. “I’m grateful for what he did. My children are precious to me,” Rai said.

Williams reflected on the rescue, saying, “I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to return the child to his family safely. This is my job, and I love what I do.” The Santa Cruz District lifeguards had conducted 34 rescues and over 5,000 preventative actions over that weekend.
