Community Effort to Reduce Violence
A Chicago pastor, Corey B. Brooks, has taken a significant step to reduce violence on the South Side by organizing a major community event. On Sunday, at the almost-complete Robert R. McCormick Leadership & Economic Opportunity Center, he hosted the ‘1000 Men Unity Gathering’. This event declared the nearby area a ‘100% violence-free zone’.
‘This surpasses constructing a building,’ Brooks stated. ‘It’s about fostering a culture where men unite to safeguard families, mentor the youth, reduce violence, and build legacies.’
Participants at the gathering included pastors, fathers, mentors, activists, business leaders, former gang members, and local residents. They committed to fostering a secure environment for families in the area.
A Vision for Safety and Opportunity
Brooks revealed to Fox News Digital that around 750 men participated, voicing their commitment to making the neighborhood safe. ‘We declared peace, committing to a nonviolent zone, so children can feel secure at the center,’ Brooks explained.
The new center aims to tackle violence and poverty through various initiatives. These include workforce development, mentoring, education, entrepreneurship, job training, and community engagement. Attendees learned about the center’s planned contributions to future generations on the South Side.
Transforming a Once Dangerous Area
The area around the center was once labeled one of the most dangerous in Chicago. Brooks recalls, ‘In 2014, the Chicago Sun-Times named this the most dangerous neighborhood in Chicago.’ Brooks’ efforts, through Project H.O.O.D.—Helping Others Obtain Destiny—focus on violence reduction and poverty alleviation. Community investment and outreach have significantly improved the neighborhood’s safety.
Brooks envisions this project as a national model for urban areas. He emphasized, ‘We can alter urban neighborhood trajectories if we take responsibility, rather than waiting for the government.’
