Women’s Pro Baseball League Launches with Noteworthy Opening Day

The Women’s Pro Baseball League commenced on Saturday, marking a significant moment in sports history. The Los Angeles Queens faced the New York Heights in Springfield, Illinois. Before the athletes took the field, the pre-game festivities captured much attention.

Martha Reeves, the celebrated lead singer of Martha and the Vandellas, a group enshrined in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995, performed the national anthem. Despite the excitement, Reeves, along with two other performers, encountered criticism on social media for their rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Reeves, now 85, sang at Robin Roberts Stadium, adding a historic touch to the evening.

The match signified the return of women’s professional baseball in the U.S. after nearly 30 years. Among the participating players, Mo’ne Davis stood out. Known widely from her performance in the 2014 Little League World Series, Davis played center field for the Queens. She scored a run in Los Angeles’ victorious effort.

Maggie Foxx, another standout for the Queens, excelled on both offense and defense. She achieved two hits, contributed two RBIs, and struck out two opponents as a pitcher. On the Heights’ side, pitcher Rakyung Kim played during the fourth inning, making her mark on the inaugural game.

Showing impressive skill, Heights catcher Denae Benites completed the game with four hits and two RBIs. Reflecting on the experience, she highlighted 99-year-old Maybelle Blair’s ceremonial first pitch. Blair, a former player for the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League from 1943 to 1954, brought a sense of legacy and continuity to the event. Blair’s participation honored the legacy of women’s baseball, originally popularized in part by the film “A League of Their Own.”

Benites expressed admiration, “I think that’s pretty incredible. Maybelle’s been with us since the beginning of this journey. She’s paved a path for us. She’s a special person, and I’m so happy that she got to make it out here and do that today.” Maybelle Blair’s presence underscored the continuity of women’s contributions to the sport.

The Los Angeles Queens emerged victorious with a final score of 10-8, making the opening day memorable for fans and players alike.
