Air Ambulance Crash Raises Concerns About GPS Interference
Federal investigators are examining the fatal crash of a New Mexico air ambulance after the loss of GPS navigation during a U.S. military jamming exercise. This accident raises significant questions about civilian aviation’s readiness for electronic warfare.
GPS Interference Incident
According to a preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board, the Beech King Air crew lost GPS capability shortly after departing Roswell, New Mexico, on May 14. At that time, the military conducted a planned GPS-denial exercise. Air traffic controllers requested the military to pause the jamming exercise to assist the flight. However, it’s unclear if this interference caused the crash.
The crew had taken off from Roswell en route to Ruidoso, New Mexico, shortly before midnight. Before this flight, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a notice warning that the military GPS jamming could disrupt satellite navigation in the surrounding area. Shortly after departure, not only did the air ambulance experience GPS loss, but three other aircraft also reported similar outages.
Safety Concerns and Impact
During the flight, the crew reported spotting the airport and requested a visual approach. As the military resumed the GPS jamming, the aircraft descended unsuccessfully, leading to its collision with the Capitan Mountains. This resulted in the tragic death of two pilots and two flight nurses. Investigators have not yet confirmed whether the GPS interference was a direct cause of the crash.
Globally, aviation authorities are increasingly concerned that GPS interference is becoming a significant hazard. The FAA advises pilots to be ready to operate without GPS, while the U.N. aviation agency notes the increasing risk of interference beyond conflict zones. Industry reports indicate a 65% rise in GPS loss incidents in the first half of 2024 compared to the previous year.
Expert Opinions and Technological Challenges
“The iPhone that the pilot carried was almost certainly a better GPS receiver inside than the FAA-certified receiver providing navigation guidance to the aircraft,” – Todd Humphreys, Director of the Radionavigation Laboratory, University of Texas
Humphreys and others warn that existing FAA-certified cockpit GPS receivers are outdated and more vulnerable to jamming. Despite advancements in GPS technology, aviation certification has not kept up with these evolving threats. New GPS technology offers more resilience, but its integration into aviation remains slow.
Regulators are urged to fast-track modernization efforts. This becomes more pressing as GPS jamming becomes prevalent in military training exercises and potential drone defense tactics. In areas such as Europe and the Middle East, commercial aviation already faces frequent interference related to regional conflicts.
Improving Aviation Safety
While the U.S. experiences less disruption, incidents like the recent Washington case underscore the urgency. In March 2025, multiple airliners experienced false collision alerts due to counter-drone tests, illustrating the impact of GPS interference.
The FAA must update its policies and systems to adapt to these changes. As technology advances, it’s crucial for aviation safety to evolve in tandem, addressing new forms of GPS jamming and spoofing threats.
