Detroit Suburb Couple Faces Charges for Explosive Incident
A suburban Detroit couple faces serious charges after allegedly throwing an explosive device into their neighbor’s yard. The accused, Jason Showers, 45, and his wife, Megan Showers, 38, are from St. Clair Shores, Michigan. If convicted, they face significant prison time, according to the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office.
Prosecutors allege that Megan Showers lit the explosive, described as a red, cylindrical object marked with ‘BYE BYE’. Her husband, Jason, is said to have thrown it into their 72-year-old neighbor’s property. Fortunately, the neighbor managed to extinguish the device. The incident led law enforcement to search the couple’s home, where they discovered firearms, ammunition, and materials for assembling explosives.
Macomb County prosecutor Peter Lucido expressed concern over the case, emphasizing the danger posed to the senior community member. He affirmed his office’s commitment to public safety and prosecuting those accused of endangering others.
The charges against Jason and Megan Showers include placing explosives near property and possessing bombs with unlawful intent, both felonies with a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison. Additionally, Jason faces charges for being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm and ammunition, each carrying a potential five-year sentence. He also has two counts of felony firearm possession, each with a mandatory two-year sentence.
Jason’s status as a habitual offender, with at least four prior felony convictions, allows for a possible life sentence if convicted of any of the top charges. Their initial court appearance occurred on Wednesday, with a probable cause hearing set for August 14.
The court granted Jason a $100,000 cash-only bond, with conditions requiring him to wear a steel cuff GPS tether and prohibiting contact with his wife or neighbor. Megan’s bond was set at $20,000, with the option to pay 10% through a bail bondsman. She may return home but cannot contact her husband or the neighbor.
