Exploring Sexual Themes in Summer Movies

A famous musician once sang about how sex is natural and good. Everyone can choose their own path. It should not bring shame or discomfort. Instead, it can be enjoyable, liberating, and even quirky.

This summer’s films capture this idea with enthusiasm. Comedies like I Want Your Sex and The Invite explore unconventional sexuality. Now, two new films present varied takes on desire: Jane Schoenbrun’s Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma and Will Gluck’s One Night Only.

The Premise of One Night Only

Starring Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner, One Night Only offers a dystopian tale. The story takes place in a future where premarital sex is restricted to a single 12-hour period each year. In this world, laws mandate individuals’ marital status via biosensors on their wrists.

Such a unique concept might explore issues like the policing of bodies or generational views on sex. Unfortunately, the film does not delve deeply into these ideas. It features some humorous moments but lacks thorough engagement with its politics. Questions about what qualifies as “sex” or how outsiders fit into this society remain unanswered.

The film includes potential resistance against these laws but does not explore this deeply. It instead suggests that enforced celibacy could make people more selective about partners. However, it ignores the pressure to marry merely to avoid legal trouble. Despite a promising premise, weak chemistry between the leads and mediocre humor diminish its effectiveness.

Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma’s Unique Approach

In contrast, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma offers a sharp look at sexual anxiety and internalized judgments. The story follows Kris, a young filmmaker, who reboots a horror franchise that influenced her youth.

Kris seeks Billy Presley, the film’s original star, played by Gillian Anderson. The dynamic between them becomes less antagonistic and more deeply interconnected than expected.

Their on-screen chemistry helps Kris embrace her own desires. Schoenbrun, who is trans and nonbinary, crafts a story rich in film theory and gender studies. The film avoids being overly didactic, capturing the messy, often contradictory nature of sexual exploration.

Conclusion: Divergent Views on Sex

Both films arrive simultaneously, offering contrasting views on sexuality and societal norms. Teenage Sex and Death challenges repressive ideas through progressive, chaotic storytelling. One Night Only presents a more traditional, ultimately cautionary tale.

Their concurrent release underscores the ongoing tension between art that challenges repression and art that reinforces it. Both capture distinct aspects of our cultural moment.
